Cheat Sheet and Abbreviations
Abbreviation Location Title Description
Caudal ESI OR Caudal ESI Epidural steroid injection that targets low back, used for diffuse pain
CPB OR Celiac Plexus Block For abdominal pain above the belly button that comes from diseases of pancreas, liver, intestines, spleen
Facet OR Facet steroid injection (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar) Used for arthritic joints of the spine. Primarily a diagnostic block in to evaluate efficacy of burning the nerves that go to that joint. Burning the nerve is called “median branch RFA (radiofrequency ablation)”.
GI OR Ganglion Impar For deep pelvic pain. Likely causes are bladder, ovaries, uterus, rectum
Glossoph OR Glossopharyngeal block Block of the nerves that go the posterior tongue and oral cavity. Can result in pain after surgeries, cancer, radiation
Hypogas OR Hypogastric block Block of the nerves that go the back of oral cavity and throat. Can result in pain after surgeries, cancer, radiation
IHP OR Inferior hypogastric For pelvic pain. Likely causes are bladder, ovaries, uterus, rectum
IT pump OR/ office Intrathecal pump Used to deliver medicines directly into the spine in the area that receives painful nerve fibers. Trials and placement in OR, refills in office. Will need to call the representative: Medtronic or St. Jude. Will also need to order the medicines.
LSB OR Lumbar Sympathetic block For nerve pain in the lower extremities caused by nerve injury. Symptoms are typically burning, shooting, or electrical. Treated conditions include: diabetic neuropathy, RSD or CRPS, vascular insufficiency, amputation pain. This may be a precursor to SCS trial
Neurolysis OR Chemical neurolysis of peripheral nerves Used to chemically burn nerves. Typically for the intra-abdominal blocks. Because of its risk for permanent injury, this is used very cautiously but still has an important role in unresponsive pain
Occ Office Occipital Steroids to the two major nerves that innervate the back of the head. Used for headaches
PRFA OR Pulsed Radiofrequency ablation Used for nerves that have more function than just relaying pain. By pulsing it you decrease the effect of the ablation but target the pain fibers more than others. Used in facial nerves and nerves going to the periphery
PVB OR Paravertebral block Used for chest wall pain. Nerve pain can develop from chest wall surgery, mastectomy, or chest wall trauma
RFA OR Median branch Radiofrequency ablation Burning the nerves that go to an arthritic spine joint. Nerves grow back after 3-6 months. Its like pruning a tree.
SCS OR/ Office Spinal cord stimulator interrogation Trials and placement are in OR, but interrogations in the office. Will need to call the representative to notify them of our plans. Three companies: Medtronic, boston scientific, St. Jude / ANS.
SHP OR Superior hypogastric For abdominal pain below the belly button. Pain usually from lower part of intestines, and may be from ovaries, uterus, bladder
SI Steroid OR Sacroiliac steroid injection Injection in the low part of the back. SI is most affected during walking. Connects the hip to the spine.
Stellate OR Stellate ganglion block For nerve pain in the upper extremities caused by nerve injury. Symptoms are typically burning, shooting, or electrical. Treated conditions include: amputation pain, RSD or CRPS, vascular insufficiency. This may be a precursor to SCS trial
TF-ESI OR Transforaminal epidural steroid injection Epidural steroid injection that targets the disc and nerve root. Used for pain that radiates in specific distributions from 1) the neck down the arm or 2) low back down the leg
TPI Office Trigger point injection Steroids injected in taught or sprained muscles
Trigem OR Trigeminal nerve block Block of the nerves that innervate the face. Can result in pain after surgeries, cancer, radiation, or in trigeminal neuralgia
US Ultrasounded guided Not yet part of our practice but eventually will start doing procedures using ultrasound to reduce patient and doctor radiation exposure and do certain blocks more safely
FBSS NA Failed back surgery syndrome When patients have had back surgery but they continue to have pain, the pathology may have resulted in permanent nerve damage to their back giving them a sensation of pain. This can be treated with certain injections or spinal cord stimulation (SCS)
Kypho OR Kyphoplasty When tumor or osteoporosis has eaten out vertebral bones, it can fracture and collapse. Kypho places a balloon inside the fractured bone to lift it and make room for cementing like in vertebroplasty
Vertebro OR Vertebroplasty When tumor or osteoporosis has eaten out vertebral bones, it can fracture and collapse. This cements the bone to prevent it from hurting
