The Origins and Evolution of Wellward
Pioneers in Integrative Orthopedics, Pain, and Mental Health
About Our Practice
Wellward originated as a practice known as Pain Management Medicine, founded by Dr. Maz and Dr. Shirazi, a husband and wife physician team. Their vision introduced the concept of multidisciplinary pain management to Kentucky, driven by their experiences at the Veterans Administration. Dr. Maz initiated the first pain clinic focused on veterans, while Dr. Shirazi practiced psychiatry, providing care to veterans.
Recognizing the overlap between their fields and the community's pressing needs, they spun off their original practice in 1992 at Central Baptist Hospital. Nearly two decades later, Dr. Danesh, who completed his training at renowned institutions like Johns Hopkins and MD Anderson, joined the practice. With his expertise in pain and regenerative medicine, he brought the latest advances to the Bluegrass region. He writes about his early experiences evolving the practice in his best-selling book, Fifty Shades of Pain: How to Cheat on your Surgeon with a Drug-free Affair.
Today, Wellward stands as the premier provider of non-surgical orthopedics, non-opioid pain management, and cutting-edge psychiatric care in the area. The dedicated team at Wellward continually strives to innovate better and more sustainable approaches to treat conditions that disrupt people's sense of control over their bodies. The integrated HEAL method described in the new Orthobiologics Book has evolved from over 100 combined clinical years of experience, giving credit to Wellward as a leader in the field. The practice remains committed to delivering comprehensive and integrated care, empowering individuals to regain control over their physical and mental well-being.
