Treating Stubborn Depression with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Sometimes depression doesn't get better, even with medication and psychological counseling. If you have been treated for depression, yet still struggle with debilitating symptoms, you may have treatment-resistant depression. Part of Wellward's cutting-edge model of psychiatric care, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) may be a treatment option for you.

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-approved treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.
What does TMS treat?
TMS relieves symptoms of depression that have not responded to other treatments, such as talk therapy and antidepressants.
How does TMS work?
During your TMS session, a helmet containing a magnetic coil will be placed over your head, activating neurons. You will be upright, comfortable, and able to return to normal activity immediately after the treatment.
Who is a candidate for TMS?
TMS may be an effective treatment for patients with depression who have not benefitted from antidepressant medications or therapy. Wellward psychiatrists carefully evaluate the risks and benefits for each patient before moving forward with treatment.
How many TMS sessions will I need?
Patients have five twenty-minute sessions per week for one month.
What are the side effects from TMS?
TMS is noninvasive. Side effects tend to be mild and improve within one to two weeks of beginning treatment. The most common side effect is headache, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Does my health insurance cover TMS treatments?
In the United States, most commercial health insurances and Medicare cover TMS for treatment-resistant depression.
